Why Mindset Matters Now More Than Ever

I heard a speaker once ask the question, “do you want to know what next year or the next 5 years is going to be like for you?”

It was an interesting question because I was in a growth period and if I could get the cleft notes for making life better and making it better faster, I wanted the answer.

But it was his answer that changed everything for me. I didn’t like his answer, but it changed my mindset in that moment.

You may not like the answer either, so it is ok if you want to stop reading right now. I wouldn’t go any further if you are looking for an easy answer to the easy button like I was back then.

Today I realized this gentleman was right. Sometimes I don’t like it. Sometimes I still want the easy button.

I have been rebuilding my health for the last 3 years and it is his advice that has kept me going. At one time I was in fantastic shape. I could run 10-plus miles without dying, I had less than 10% body fat, and I looked great with my shirt off, but then I practiced the reverse of his advice and let myself go and got soft. My knees began to hurt, I couldn’t run at all, and I no longer looked great with my shirt off. I began to give in to poor habits and excuses.

I can give you several examples of how these poor habits and mindset affected different areas of my life, my finances, my business, my relationships with others, and my ability to be an effective leader. This didn’t happen overnight, but slowly as I got away from the right mindset.

And then I heard the advice I needed.

His advice

After the question he had asked, he said “your life will be the same as it is right now in one year or 5 years if you do not make different choices for yourself.”

“If You Don’t Design Your Own Life Plan, Chances Are You’ll Fall Into Someone
Else’s Plan. And Guess What They Have Planned for You? Not Much”

What was Jim Rohn saying? He said that until we take control of our minds, thoughts, and goals, we will be at the mercy of what the world throws at us.

The world could be others around us, it could be our job it could be those we are supposed to lead.

In my own experience and in the coaching of others I have performed, we blame others. We blame the government, we blame our boss or employees. We blame our spouses and our kids and the list could keep going.

We have a lot of blame in the world today.

The challenge of this email is to remind you that you have more control than you think you do, but it requires a change in mindset to regain control of your future.

Or if you want to know what this time next year will look like or this time in 5 years, just look at your thinking right now.

Jim also said “Take Care of Your Body. It’s the Only Place You Have to Live”

I would add to take care of your mind or others will fill it with things that prevent you from being your best.

As we move into the season of Thanksgiving, look around and be thankful for the things you have accomplished this year, but don’t settle for where you are today. Begin a new season of growth. As the leaves fall in the winter, let old thinking and poor habits fall away from you and prepare yourself for new growth as you fill your mind with new ideas, new thinking, and new friends that challenge you to the next level in 2023.
